Most laminate flooring is installed as a "floating floor" meaning the floor
is not adhered to the subfloor, rather it floats,
and is installed over a plastic moisture barrier
and a layer of foam to reduce noise and offer a stable foundation.
A floating floor system is used to allow the floor to move with seasonal expansion
and contraction associated with changes in temperature and humidity.
The actual laminated floor is adhered together by gluing the tongue
and groove edges together and finishing the perimeter of the room with wall base
or quarter round.
